What is hot yoga and why should you try it?

Have you heard about the latest form of Yoga, called the Hot Yoga? After Power Yoga, this new form called Hot Yoga is the latest way that many people around the globe are choosing to lose weight, get better physical and mental health and also meditate. Hot Yoga has been usually associated with Bikram Yoga, which is a specific kind of Yoga introduced by Bikram Choudhary who is a renowned yoga guru. The idea behind this workout is to perform Yoga poses in a hot, humid temperature; where the heat tends to increase flexibility as well as heart rate for a more effective workout.

Hot Yoga originated in the southern India, where the temperature is hot and humid around the year. Now people around the world, especially the USA, are trying to replicate this by creating a hot, humid environment where they practice these yoga and meditation techniques. Bikram Yoga came to the US in early 1970’s and became a very popular form of Hot Yoga. However, this isn’t the only form of this special Yoga, as Forest Yoga, TriBalance Yoga and Power Yoga can also be included in the Hot Yoga category.

To master this Yoga, you will need to practice intrinsic Yoga poses and meditation techniques in a heated room, where the temperatures can vary from 95 to 102 degrees. A vigorous workout session at that temperature is bound to show results, since you will be sweating profusely by the end of the yoga session. To couple a few meditation techniques with an hour of Hot Yoga can be the perfect workout for great physical and mental health. However, keep these tips in mind when choosing this kind of yoga.

  • Have a good quality yoga mat to practice the yoga poses and meditation techniques. Since you will be sweating profusely, you need a mat that keeps you comfortable.
  • Wear lose clothing, that doesn’t stick to your body or make you feel uncomfortable
  • Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before and after a Hot Yoga session.
  • If you are pregnant, don’t choose this style of Yoga because it raises the core temperature of the body. Instead, join a yoga class for pregnant women.
  • If you want to experience authentic Hot Yoga, then look for a certified teacher. Just doing yoga at hot temperatures isn’t enough, it is the intricacy of the poses and the exact order that they are performed in that makes this form of yoga so successful.
